Some of the most fun you can have is competing, and we love doing that at the Midwest Gaming Classic! Below, find the official show list of tournaments! Click on each to find out more about that tournament. Note that all tournaments are FREE to enter with your ticket, and are for fun!

 

MGC Cosplay Championship

MGC Cosplay Championship

Come see one of the most fun Cosplay contests around! Svengoolie and Bright Eyes Cosplay co-host this fun event presented by Spooky Pinball, LLC! With prizes for the best male, female, group and kids costumes, this is a fun event to watch or participate in! Entry is completely free, but you do need to register between noon and 7pm at the MGC Music Merchandise booth near the stage.

Midwest Air Hockey Championship

Midwest Air Hockey Championship

Some of the greatest air hockey players in the world are coming to Milwaukee for the Midwest Air Hockey Championship, and now you can play in! Participate in a tournament on either Friday night or Saturday morning for the chance to win one of two play-in spots for the main tournament. Then, on Saturday starting at 2pm, watch as the winners of those play-ins take on some of the best in the world, with the finals being held at 7pm Saturday!

Midwest Pinball Championship

Come prove that you are the best pinball player in the Midwest! The Midwest Pinball Championship is the largest pinball tournament in Wisconsin! On Saturday, players qualify by playing six entries on three different machines. Those scores are tallied and ranked, and the top 44 players get a chance to move on! The top 16 qualifying players battle in a Crazy Ball Play-In Sunday morning to get four of the final 32 qualifying positions. Top 32 players then play in head-to-head competition until winners are announced! The top 16 players will receive certificates commemorating their play.

Midwest Tetris Championship

Midwest Tetris Championship

The popular Midwest Tetris Championship returns! This is the largest Tetris tournament in the Midwest and one of the longest running ones in the country. If you think you have what it takes to fit pieces into the right spots to eliminate lines and earn lots of points, you’ve come to the right spot! Players will play a qualifying round on the NES version of Tetris, A style. The top 12 people will return to participate in a fun ladder style elimination tournament Sunday! Winners will receive certificates commemorating their play!

Clock Chaos

Clock Chaos

Returning to it’s classic format in 2018, Clock Chaos is the signature warm up to the Midwest Gaming Classic! Tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for those who are attending the VIG Pre-Party on April 13th (Note: Clock Chaos tickets are now SOLD OUT) Please see your entry ticket for your entry time. Final games take place at 9pm.

Want to be able to say you helped make an arcade game? Now you can! Stop at the Cosmotrons booth and draw a map that you think would be great for the game! The Cosmotrons team will be picking one or more maps throughout the weekend to put INTO the final version of the game as a playable level! Will it be yours?

Perhaps the best known 3D arcade racing game of all time, Daytona is a classic! Grab a Saturn controller and see how quickly you can make it around the track! The winner is the person who gets the shortest time!

For those who are younger who want a chance to play in a totally fun air hockey tournament, this is for you! Stop by at noon and secure a spot, and then get the chance to go head-to-head with kids in attendance for the show!

Juniors Pinball Tournament

If you are under 10 and want to participate in a pinball tournament, the Midwest Gaming Classic will have just what you’re looking for! Play in a pinball game to see who can get the best score to qualify! After qualifying, four finalists will compete in a head-to-head tournament like the full tournament and will receive certificates.

Juniors may only enter twice times with their highest score counting. Please note: We do ask that any child under the age of 10 ranked in the top 500 WPPR players to not participate in the Pinball Junior Championship. These players are still highly encouraged to participate in the Midwest Pinball Championships.

Legend of the Five Rings: Master of MGC

Play the Legend of the Five Rings at the show, and if you can beat everyone else, you will get a special playmat and the recognized title of the MASTER OF THE MGC!

Mario Kart 8 Tournament (Switch)

Qualify by racing around one of the courses in the great Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch and getting one of the top four qualifying scores! Then, return at 4pm for an incredible head-to-head race challenge! The top four players all get certificates commemorating their play!

PinGolf

Golf… with pinball machines? It’s a fun way to play! Each game has a goal, and you get one “stroke” for each ball you play on your way to get that goal. You may have to play two games to score high enough, or you may get it on your first ball!

The format has been mixed up this year, with more machines to play on and a higher capacity so more people can play! You will get to pick which half of the field you are going to play on, so choose wisely! As always, play as many times as you want, as long as time allows! All entries must be COMPLETED by 11:30pm. In the case of a tie for first, those players will move to a single ball play-off at that time, with the winner placing top! Winners receive a certificate for their play!

Play with a friend or family member in this unique game! Each player takes one side of the machine and is responsible for controlling it. Can you work together to score the most points? Those that do win at the close of the competition window. There are Friend and Family divisions of play:

Tag Team Friend Play with anyone and see what sort of score you can get! Teams are ranked by top score. Winning team gets a certificate for each player!

Tag Team Family Play with a family member aged 9 or under! Teams are ranked by top score. Winning team gets a certificate for each player!

Bring your 100 point fleet with you for a fun and free face off against anyone and everyone else who has a 100 point fleet ready to fight back!

Bring your favorite Amiibo to play in our Coin Rush Melee tournament! This is a king of the hill style brawl where you gain a coin for each match you win. If you lose you can sign up to get in line to try again! Most Coins in the allotted time wins the coveted Amiibo Championship Certificate! This tournament occurs at the Video Presentation Area.

It’s time to SMASH! Grab a controller and see who comes out on top in this fun casual style Smash tournament!

Tecmo Super Bowl Tournament

Tecmo Super Bowl Tournament

Come join us at 2:30pm for a Tecmo Super Bowl Tournament on the NES. Don’t worry about any technical rules because we are playing the Hardcore Format. Just bring your A game for this double or single elimination tournament (depending on number of entrants). Games will be streamed live on The Retro Sports Gamer Youtube Channel. Note – this tournament is held in the Museum area near the Tecmo Super Bowl set up.

Women at the Midwest Gaming Classic will have a chance to play pinball against only other women! Qualifying will take place throughout the day on Saturday using a single machine’s entries from the Midwest Pinball Championship (both qualifying attempts combined), with the top eight women at the end of qualifying facing off in an elimination-style tournament to decide the winner! The top players will receive certificates!

Oh no! Donkey Kong’s Banana Horde is missing, and you only have FIVE minutes to collect everything you can! This isn’t just Donkey Kong Country, it is a special Competition Cart that was produced for in-store competitions and to help promote the game. Ultra-rare now, we’re going to find out who is king banana at the MGC! Top score when the competition time ends is the winner!

Can you stop the bombs that the mad bomber is dropping from exploding in this classic Atari 2600 game? The winner stops the most bombs and therefore scores the most points!

Sonic 2 Speed Run (Genesis)

How fast are you? Get through the first level of Sonic 2 while collecting a certain number of rings, and you’ll get the prize! The winner is the fastest blue blur at the end of the competition time. If there is a tie, the number of rings total will be the determining factor, followed by points. Winner gets a certificate.

The iconic Space Invaders for the Atari 2600 will be set up for play in a variety of ways for showgoers, including special divisions for singles, doubles, and families! Top score at the end of the competition for each category is the winner! Here are the different ways you can compete:

Space Invaders Single Take on a seriously challenging version of Space Invaders for the 2600, as we select one of the various game variations for you to show your skills in. High score wins a certificate!

Space Invaders Double Double your fun with a friend! Take on Space Invaders as a pair, trying to get your best score possible! Winning team gets a certificate for each player!

Space Invaders Family Make it a family affair! Work with your child, or have two kids take on the challenge together – so long as one of the players is under the age of 10!

When Star Fox was coming out, Nintendo created a special Competition Cart version of the game that timed you for just five minutes and challenged you to get the highest score! Now, many years later, we have one of the original Competition Carts in hand, and are ready for you to try to get your best score! The person with the highest score at the end of the competition time wins a certificate!

All you need to do on this competition is make it through level 1-1 of the classic NES game Super Mario Bros with a challenge. Sounds easy? Then grab the controller and find out!

Super Mario Bros Firepower Main Players must finish the level big with firepower. Players are then ranked first on time taken, secondly on coins collected and finally on points received. Top ranked player at the end of the time is the winner!

Super Mario Bros Firepower Kids If you are 9 or under, give classic Mario a chance! For this speed run, players just need to finish level 1-1. Players are ranked first on time taken, secondly on coins collected and finally on points received. Top ranked player at the end of the time is the winner!

Qualify by taking on one of the courses in the iconic Super Mario Kart for the SNES and being one of the top four qualifying scores! The top four scores at the close of qualifying are invited to return at 7pm for an incredible head-to-head Battle Mode challenge! The fourth seed will battle the first seed and the second and third seeds will duke it out in a best two-of-three to determine who the final two are! The top four players all get certificates commemorating their play!

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 (Dreamcast)

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 (Dreamcast)

The (old) Tony Hawk Pro Skater series is a true classic, and to us and many others, nothing is as classic as THPS2, and the best version of it is on the Dreamcast. Take on the first level of the game for two minutes to see just how many points you can rack up! Highest amount of points when the competition time closes is declared the winner!
